Miguel Angel Mendez strives for compassion and empathy. Overcoming personal hurdles, Miguel is aware of, and sympathizes, with the array of difficulties faced by his community and beyond. Harnessing this empathy for others and the environment, he has pushed himself to leave his comfort zone to inspire change in the world. He is a member of Heirs to Our Oceans, has presented to legislators at the California State Capitol, spoken in front of key figures, expanded his horizons by traveling, and had the opportunity to explore the marine ecosystem while freediving in Hawaii. As a bi-lingual speaker, Miguel has witnessed how language-barriers in his rural community have impacted emergency services; his goal is to become a firefighter so that when his community calls, Miguel puede ayudarlos de manera eficiente. Miguel’s empathetic and courageous leadership is integral to his dreams of helping his community and protecting the environment.
