Al Teglia Scholarship Information

The Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Scholarship Fund provides college and vocational scholarships to Jobs for Youth participants. Each year, the program awards scholarships to deserving youth who would like to pursue their college/vocational education. In 2018, recipients of an Al Teglia Scholarship will receive $1,500 to go towards their educational goals. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the 36th Annual Jobs for Youth Breakfast on Thursday, May 24th, 2018 at 7:30 AM at the Foster City Crowne Plaza Hotel.*

*If awarded, scholarship recipients must submit additional documentation at time of scholarship offer and attend the event in order to receive their scholarship. No exceptions will be allowed.

Applicant Eligibility

Applicants* must be:
1. A San Mateo County resident
2. A current or past Jobs for Youth participant (between the ages 16-21)
3. At least a current high school Junior (11th grade)
4. Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

*Note: Past recipients are welcome to apply, however, the maximum number of awards is limited to 2 per recipient.

Scholarship Application

Submit application packet via email to

1. Cover Page with name, phone number, address, birth date, school, graduation date, and email address.

2. Typed Essay* that clearly addresses the following:

a. A clear vocational or educational focus

b. Hardships faced

c. Need for financial assistance

d. Accomplishments (school, job/volunteer, & awards)

e. Planned use of scholarship

*Must be Word document, 12 pt. font, double-spaced, minimum 500 words & maximum 750 words.

*Students with Individual Educational Plans (IEP) have the option of submitting a 2 ½ minute video application essay and emailing it directly to IEP’s and reference letters must also be emailed by the deadline date.

*Scholarship essays will be evaluated based on the criteria above, 5 pts each section. Submitting a similar essay from previous years will not be accepted.

3. TWO headshot photos of yourself (4×6) (i.e. graduation photo)

*Email as JPEGs in your application email.

*Background must be a white or a very light color.

*Must be dressed in interview/graduation attire (NO selfies!)

4. TWO current professional reference letters (mandatory by deadline date)

Reference Letters Guidelines

One of the two reference letters must be from a teacher from your previous or current school. Letters from family members and/or friends will not be accepted.

Reference letters should address the following questions and include:

  1. Name of student in subject line.
  2. What qualities best describe this applicant?
  3. To your knowledge, does this applicant have a historically disadvantaged background/barriers (i.e., low income for several years, first generation college student, inner-city or migrant family).
  4. Please discuss applicant’s achievements.
