Stephanie Barillas is a senior at San Mateo High School who plans to study at Skyline College before transferring to a four-year university to study Criminal Justice and eventually law school.
She has experienced first-hand the unintended consequences of our justice system on families, and wants to reform it to be more humane and less financially burdensome on low-income communities. Her teachers praise her perseverance in the face of adversity, her consistent drive to improve, and her emotional openness as strengths which will take her far.
For Stephanie, an Al Teglia Jobs for Youth Scholarship will clear financial obstacles to her childhood dream of improving outcomes for families like hers, and support her goal of being the first woman in her family to attend college.
