The Position

This classification is eligible to participate in the East Palo Alto Police Officer’s Association (P.O.A.) bargaining unit.  Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work by utilizing community policing and problem-oriented strategies including controlling traffic flow; enforcing state and local regulations; performing investigative work; participating in, and providing support and assistance to special departmental crime prevention and enforcement programs.

The Examination Process

Upon meeting the minimum qualifications for this position, the candidates will be placed on an eligible list. Your application will not receive further consideration if you fail to attach, email or fax your Certificate or letter from the Academy. The eligible list is valid for one year after the date it is approved.

The Selection Process

Once placed on the eligible list, and at the time a vacancy needs to be filled, the Recruiting Commander will contact eligible candidates for an interview.   The Recruiting Commander will mail a Personal History Statement packet for completion to those candidates who successfully complete the interview. This packet will contain information on the background investigation and hiring process. Based on a review of the completed Personal History Statement, candidates may be scheduled for another departmental interview.

Before a conditional employment offer is made, candidates must take a polygraph examination, be fingerprinted, submit proof of a legal right to work in the United States, and a background investigation. If successful, a conditional employment offer is made and candidates are then required to successfully pass a psychological, medical examination including a stress agility assessment, and drug screen. The process will end with the Police Chief’s interview.  The Chief of Police or his designee will make the final appointment.

Note: The City of East Palo Alto reserves the right, at its discretion, to limit the number of
qualified candidates invited to the selection process.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Must be at least 20 1/2 years old by the Exam Date AND 21 years old by Date of Appointment All applicants must possess a High School Diploma from an accredited United States High School or GED from the United States All applicants must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for Citizenship (Per California Government Code Section 1031) All applicants must possess a valid driver’s license Applicants may not have any felony or domestic violence convictions Must have at least 20/40 vision uncorrected
