We are searching for a highly motivated and hard-working, independent individual capable of working in a team-oriented environment. The Parks Division of the Community Services Department is looking for a candidate that has a desire to learn a variety of parks maintenance tasks and an interest in long-term professional development.

The successful candidate will have the ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled and/or skilled tasks in maintenance and landscape work for city parks and facilities and operates equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City parks, street trees, street median landscaping, buildings and facilities; perform heavy manual tasks; work safely and adhere to established safety principles and practices; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; work effectively in the absence of close supervision; operate a variety of vehicles and equipment in a safe and effective manner; read and interpret basic maps and blueprints; understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

In addition to graduation from high school and possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California driver’s license and a Commercial Driver’s License certification (class B license) by completion of probationary period, the ideal candidate will possess a positive attitude and maintain a successful track record of the following:

  • Experience working in a parks or landscape maintenance field with knowledge of tools and equipment.
  • Conveying information and ideas clearly and concisely to individuals or groups; listening actively to others.
  • Working cooperatively with others to help a team or work group achieve its goals.
  • Maintaining effectiveness when experiencing major changes in work responsibilities or environment (e.g., people, processes, structure, or culture); adjusting effectively to change by exploring the benefits, trying new approaches, and collaborating with others to make the change successful.
  • Placing a high priority on the (internal or external) customer’s perspective when making decisions and taking action; implementing service practices that meet the customers’ and own organization’s needs.
  • Assimilating and applying new job-related information in a timely manner.
  • Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes and tasks.

What happens next?
