San Mateo County Parks is currently seeking a part time or full-time extra help Assistant Volunteer Coordinator for the Department’s Visitor Services Division.

The Visitor Services Division has an environmental service and education focus. It hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year, including Community Stewardship, corporate, youth, and faith-based volunteer work events.

Examples Of Duties

The Assistant Volunteer Coordinator position is responsible for assisting the Volunteer Coordinator with the following:

  • Plan, organize and develop a wide variety of volunteer programs and volunteer activities.
  • Recruit, interview, screen, orient and assist in the training of volunteers.
  • Supervise event activities and participants.
  • Match volunteer skills with program needs.
  • Develop and update informational brochures, newsletters and flyers, and social media posts regarding the activities of the volunteer programs.
  • Maintain accurate records and files of departmental volunteer and docent programs and activities, including monitoring of volunteer program budget.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

NOTE: This is an extra-help, at-will assignment, paid on an hourly basis. Some extra help positions are eligible for benefits under the Affordable Care Act. Extra help employees are not guaranteed permanent status at the end of the assignment.

Qualifications

The ideal candidates for this position should have the following competencies:

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and instruction; as well as, collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Perform moderately heavy physical labor for extended periods of time. Stand, walk, and bend for extended periods of time. Lift items weighing up to 60 pounds. Work outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Hike in various terrain with packs and tools.
  • Perform invasive plant removal and vegetation management by manual or mechanical means. Assist with various habitat restoration projects, such as native planting, invasive plant control, rare plant enhancement, etc. Lead parks volunteer stewardship activities and events.
  • Operate light trucks.
  • Communicating effectively orally and in writing. Learn and apply policies, procedures, and safety regulations related to park operations to which assigned. Follow oral and written instructions including safety rules, procedures, and practices. Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
  • Perform light construction, repair and maintenance of facilities and equipment. Perform landscaping, ground maintenance, pruning, lawn and plant care. Maintain hand tools, including tool re-handling and sharpening.
  • Use handheld GPS (or similar) to record information in the field.
  • Record work performed data and summary entries.
  • Advanced skills in computer systems and applications, such as the Microsoft Office suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Zoom, Social Media platforms, etc.
  • Experience working with environmental education or outreach programs is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Current students may also apply.
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred.

The position requires regular work on each weekend at various San Mateo County Parks in a variety of weather and physical conditions.
